Sector flow

Follow Smart Money, Sector by Sector

Sector Overview takes the whole market’s aggressive option flow and rolls it up by sector, on windows from a single session out to 30 days. It answers three questions at once: where institutions are paying up, which direction they lean, and which names are behind the move.

What is sector flow?

A single option print is hard to read on its own. One big sweep might be a hedge against a stock position, a roll from one expiry to the next, or a fund rebalancing, and nothing about the print itself says which. Sector flow looks one level up. When aggressive buyers keep paying up across many names in the same group, the list of explanations gets short: that pattern is what a positioning shift looks like, and it tends to show in the options market before the rotation is obvious in price.

Aggressive has a precise meaning here. Robinflow counts a trade as buyer initiated when it fills at the midpoint of the quote or higher, meaning someone chose to pay up rather than wait. Calls bought that way are tallied as bullish premium, puts bought that way as bearish premium, and trades that hit the bid are left out entirely, since a seller taking the bid tells you about urgency to get out rather than conviction to get in. Every number on the page is built from that narrowed stream of trades.

The sector map

The map gives every sector a tile sized by the aggressive premium behind it and colored by which way that premium leans, so the busiest groups and their direction read at a glance. Pick a window from 1D through 30D to set today against what has been accumulating over the month: a sector that is quiet this session but heavy on the 30D view is telling you something different from one that lit up this morning.

Clicking a sector opens its constituent symbols ranked the same way, and clicking a symbol opens its Options Explorer view with the street’s consensus beside the tape. Going from "technology is bid" to "these three names are why" takes two clicks.

The measure behind the map, Aggressive Net Flow, is intentionally narrower than the Net Flow on the dashboard, which counts every trade regardless of how it filled. The two can disagree for the same symbol, and the gap is itself useful: a name with large Net Flow but small Aggressive Net Flow is being traded passively, while a name where the two are close is being chased.

Dollar rankings favor the biggest tickers by default: the largest names print the largest premium almost every day, which says nothing about whether anything changed. Sector Overview instead scores each symbol against its own trailing 20 day baseline and reports the multiple, so a mid cap showing "5.4x normal flow" outranks a mega cap running at 1.1x. Readings built on only a handful of prints are labeled as such, because a small sample should not carry the same weight as a deep one.

Divergences are the rows where flow and price point in opposite directions: bullish aggressive premium into a name that sold off, or bearish premium into one that rallied. Robinflow lists them as observations about positioning, not as calls on what the stock does next. They are simply the places where someone is paying up against the tape, which is usually worth a closer look.

How to use it

A practical routine: scan the map for the sectors that are largest and most one sided, check the window to see whether that is a session story or a month long build, then open the standout names to see which trades are responsible. From there, cross check the idea against the symbol’s raw options flow for the individual prints, its dark pool prints and levels for where institutions transacted in the stock, and its GEX profile for the strikes dealer hedging is likely to defend or accelerate through.
