How to Spot Unusual Options Activity

Most of the options tape is noise. Robinflow’s Signals feed scores every trade against what’s normal for its contract, surfaces the ones that stand out, and alerts you when your tickers print something abnormal, so unusual positioning finds you instead of the other way around.

What makes options activity “unusual”?

Unusual options activity is any trade that breaks sharply from a contract’s normal pattern. In practice, four signals do most of the work: premium far above what the name typically prints; volume that exceeds the contract’s open interest, meaning new positions are being opened rather than old ones changing hands; aggressive sweeps that pay up across multiple exchanges for immediate fills; and sudden activity in strikes or expirations that have been dormant. Any one of these is worth a glance. Several together on the same contract is what traders mean when they say the tape is “talking.”

For a deeper walkthrough of these criteria, read How to spot unusual options activity.

The reason unusual activity gets attention is simple: someone chose to commit serious capital, quickly, in a specific strike and date. That does not guarantee they are right, but informed positioning ahead of news, earnings, and analyst moves tends to look exactly like this.

Signals, scored and surfaced

Robinflow’s Signals feed does the pattern-hunting continuously. Repeaters flag the same contract being bought again and again through the session. Exceeds-open-interest signals catch new positioning the moment cumulative volume passes existing OI. Block signals track institutional-size single prints, and building-blocks detection watches large positions being accumulated piece by piece. Each signal is scored, so the feed ranks itself and the loudest evidence sits at the top.

From signal to alert

You don’t have to watch the feed all day. Put your tickers on a watchlist and Robinflow pings you when they print notable activity, with an AI daily digest summarizing what mattered across your names. The AI smart filter works here too: describe the kind of unusual activity you care about in plain English and monitor exactly that.

What unusual activity can and can’t tell you

Unusual options activity is evidence of intent, not a forecast. Trades can be hedges, parts of spreads, or simply wrong. The honest use of a UOA scanner is narrowing: out of thousands of tickers, it tells you which handful printed something abnormal today and lets you investigate why. Robinflow pairs each signal with the surrounding options flow, news, and analyst context so that investigation takes minutes instead of hours.
